India rescues injured wild elephant

Indian veterinarians are rescuing an injured female wild elephant in Assam. India has the world's largest population of Asian elephants, with about 30,000 wild Asian elephants living in the country, accounting for more than 50 percent of all Asian elephants. India has more than 100 national parks and 30 elephant sanctuaries, but 70% of the country's wild elephants live outside protected areas. The expansion of human activities has led to a growing problem of human-elephant conflict. Data from India's Ministry of Environment shows 494 wild elephant deaths were reported between 2017 and 2022, of which 348 were due to electrocution, 80 due to train accidents, 41 due to poaching, and 25 due to poisoning.
