Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, receives the presidential scepter from outgoing president Alberto Fernandez, Buenos Aires. On December 10, Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, was officially sworn in at the Parliament building. In his inaugural speech, he declared that [austerity and shock therapy are the only options for solving Argentina's economic crisis], promising to do everything in his power to eliminate inflation, clean up the central bank's debts, drastically reduce government spending, and implement a fiscal adjustment of 5% of GDP for the public sector. On the same day, he signed a decree abolishing nine government departments, including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, which is equivalent to cutting the country's central government departments in half.
