A car is crushed by a pole that collapsed during the earthquake in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.At 16:10 p.m. on Jan. 1, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, at a depth of 16 kilometers, and the tremor was strongly felt in most of the area from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The earthquake has so far confirmed at least 48 deaths, more than 200 buildings collapsed and damaged, about 33,000 households without power, more than 97,000 emergency evacuation. The Japan Meteorological Agency has accumulated more than 190 aftershocks. The Government of Japan has dispatched 18 helicopters and 1,000 members of the Self-Defense Forces to the affected areas to carry out rescue operations.
